In memorium: Mrs T. Daniel

MAC expresses deepest condolences to the family and friends of much loved and respected Elder, Mrs T. Daniel.

Among her many other contributions and achievements for community over her lifetime, Mrs Daniel served as a Yindjibarndi Director at MAC and was a member of the Murujuga Circle of Elders since it formed in 2012.

She established, with her late husband, the Yatha (bough shelter) used for Murujuga Circle of Elders meetings; played a vital role in creating cultural protocols for the Ranger Program; contributed to the Murujuga Cultural Management Plan and the decision to pursue World Heritage Listing for the Murujuga Cultural Landscape.

MAC Chairperson Peter Hicks recalls: “She spoke for the country and the Lore that runs through it.

“There was not a non-Indigenous person ever coming to the organisation (MAC) without her making it very well known that they needed to do a cultural induction.

“She wanted everyone to know if they were coming here they needed come for the right reasons.

“As a Board member, she was very, very engaged.

“She was instrumental in the establishment of the Rangers. This was one of her main passions.

“She came with us on a trip to Sydney for an event with the Rangers, and she got up and sang the Murujuga song to the audience. We didn’t even know she was going to do it. She just got up and did it and it was very, very well received by the audience. It was a really proud moment for us as MAC at the time.

“What goes on in the Ranger Program today – that was from her passion. She was very vocal about how the Program was set up.

“The Rangers had to be spending time with the Elders on country to understand what it is they were there to do. That will forever be embedded into the Program.

“Even when she stepped back, still those ways that she influenced MAC, they are still being practised today.”
